Our best ideas come from others. While manning the Alpha Dog Food vendor booth at Paws for Art at Wheaton Village in Millville NJ, we were approached by Megan, a young woman with a disability, who was guided by her dog. She asked if we offered a discount for assistance dogs. At that very moment we decided to start such a program, and now we’d like to share it with the rest of the world.

Since meeting Megan, our interest in assistance dogs has peaked…

Did you know?

Assistance dogs can be broken down into three classifications.

1. Guide Dogs, often called “seeing eye dogs.” As the name suggests, they assist the blind and visually impaired. Dogs have been helping the blind since at least the mid-16th century. A popular nursery rhyme from this period: “B is for Blind man led by a dog.”

2. Hearing dogs, also called signal dogs, assist the hearing impaired. Labradors, golden retrievers, German shepherds, Doberman pinschers, rottweilers and collies are often selected as hearing dogs.

  • Mobility assistance
  • Seizure alert
  • Psychiatric service dog (to help calm their handler)
  • Therapy dogs

Some Dogs Naturally Assist Owners

By and large, most assistance dogs are trained prior to their placement, but there are many amazing stories of untrained dogs simply adapting to assist their owners as they lose their hearing or sight. This story is from the comments section on the U.S. Department of Justice website:

My husband is hearing impaired and misses a lot of what is going on around him, which can be dangerous. Our Cairn Terrier (15lbs) has, over time, developed a sense of what he needs help with, and she has done this without “formal and expensive training.” When I need to get his attention, she alerts him so he can look at me. When his phone (text message) goes off, she alerts him. She does not alert me when my phone sounds even though we have the same message tone.

Therapy Dogs – at Your Local Library

assistance dog food discountHave a child struggling with reading? Maybe its an anxiety issue that can be easily corrected by reading to a dog. Access to therapy pets is better than ever. Locally you may find an organization that facilitates positive interaction between therapy pets.

FURever As Friends, based in Swedesboro, NJ, is a group of friends with specially trained therapy dogs (and a cat). They help young children read without fear of judgement – because dogs don’t judge. The stated goal of this particular organization is to nurture the literacy skills of children.
